Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. The first thing you should do before you even start looking is to look at what you, as a customer, wants in a DJ. Think about your own personal style and what kind of personality your potential DJ will have to be able to express that through music to your guests. Do you want a boisterous extrovert who will rally your guests to the dance floor or do you prefer a more laid-back professional who will let the music do the talking? Do you even care? No one’s saying you have to have a preference either way, but if you do, now is the time to figure that out.

So now that you have figured out what you need from your DJ, it’s time to start searching. A good place to start would be Thumbtack or a similar events directory that allows clients to post real, uncensored reviews about vendors. You can also try checking out a general review website like Yelp but don’t expect to find tons of vendor reviews there.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The secret to hiring a DJ is the following: Does your DJ exhibit confidence, enthusiasm, and experience when speaking with him in person or over the phone?

These three qualities are the most important for a DJ.

If your DJ demonstrates these three qualities, then you have found the perfect DJ for your event.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Do you offer a written contract?

Will you be the DJ at our event?

May we meet with you in person before we sign a contract?

How long will you hold our date for us?

How long have you been a DJ and how many events have you done?

How many events do you do each year?

Do you perform for more than one event in a day?

What makes you different from your competitors?

Have you played at our reception site before?

Do you act as the “emcee” and make all of the announcements?

How would you define your "style" when making announcements?

What do you do to motivate the crowd if nobody is dancing?

What if something happens to you and you can’t make it to the wedding?

Will we meet again before the wedding?

Can we visit you at a performance?

May we speak to your references?

How do you keep your music collection up-to-date?

How involved can we be in selecting music for our event?

When do we need to submit our music requests and event details?

Do you take requests from our guests?

Can we submit a “Do Not Play” list?

When do you arrive to set up for our event?

What will you wear to our event?

How much of a deposit is required to secure our date?

What is included in the cost of my event?

How much would you charge for overtime?

What do you require from us?

Do you take any breaks?

What kind of equipment do you use?

Do you have a “light show”?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. The most important thing the customer should have though of is: Remember that you are the paying customer, Speak Up! Tell the DJ what you want from him. If you can’t stand the Black Eyed Peas, say so. If 70s music turns your stomach, say so. If you are open to letting the DJ read the dance floor but just want to make sure a few of your favorite songs are included in the mix, say so! A closed mouth doesn’t get fed and not even the best DJ in the world will know what songs are on your Do Not Play list if you don’t tell them.
